FoE Australia Anti-Nuclear & Clean Energy Campaign -Friends of the Earth has been campaigning for clean energy solutions

and against uranium mining and nuclear power for 35 years.With our allies, we’ve been an important part of some great victories such as stopping the Jabiluka mine, limiting the expansion of the uranium industry in Australia and scuttling proposed nuclear waste dumps.

Now we face major challenges with plans under development for at least five new uranium mines. With your support we can repeat past successes and stop the expansion of the dirty and dangerous nuclear industry. Please support the campaign. donate at donate to FOE or - download form here

PEOPLE FOR A NUCLEAR-FREE AUSTRALIA was formed to stop the Howard government's nuclear plans, but those plans could continue under Labor. Join now - and help us lobby government.

www.pnfa.org.au

The dreaded Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) that Howard signed with George Bush in the waning days of his government has NOT been revoked by the Rudd government; in fact they have recently stated that they are still committed to it. It means foreign nuclear waste returning to Australia, it means reprocessing of spent fuel in Australia and it means possible construction of deadly breeder nuclear reactors

A nuclear waste dump will almost certainly be opened in the near future in the Northern Territory if Martin Ferguson has his way. Muckaty Station has again been mentioned in this context, which is Aboriginal land located close to the Adelaide-Darwin railway line co-built by Halliburton, US Vice President Dick Cheney’s former company with whom he is still financially associated.

Defence White Paper community consultations around Australia

consultations will finish in Bendigo and Ballarat on 17 September

A five-member panel is presently conducting community consultations around Australia inviting comment and input from Australian citizens and groups on various aspects of defence policy. issues.this so-called democratic space is presently being ceded to an extremely narrow constituency, namely men whose lives revolve around the military. Unsurprisingly, these men are conveying to the five-member panel a very skewed view of what Australian citizens think of defence policy issues .

Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF)
would like to see this changed. Furthermore, we believe that it could be changed very simply by people like us attending the community consultations and putting our point of view to the five-member panel.Anyone can attend and contribute to the community consultations.The timetable for the round of community consultations can be found at: http://www.defence.gov.au/whitepaper/activities.htm

Write to Kevin Rudd asking him to honour Labor's election promise to repeal the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Act 2005

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd
Postal address: Parliament House, Canberra, ACT 2600.
Web-form: <www.pm.gov.au/contact/index.cfm>

RE: REPEAL OF NUCLEAR DUMP LAWS

Dear Prime Minister Rudd,

I am writing to ask you to honour Labor's election promise to repeal the Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Act 2005. Labor voted against the legislation and senior Labor MPs described the legislation as extreme, arrogant, heavy-handed, draconian, sorry, sordid, extraordinary and profoundly shameful. The 2007 national ALP conference voted to repeal this Act if Labor won government. ?Yet in answers to recent Senate questions, Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson refused to commit to ?repeal the legislation.??

The Commonwealth Radioactive Waste Management Act 2005 and the 2006 amendments:
* allow the imposition of a nuclear waste dump even if there is no consultation with or consent from Traditional Owners;
* limit or completely overrides the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984, and the Native Title Act 1993;
* overturn Northern Territory laws prohibiting transport and storage of nuclear waste;
* undermine and override a raft of environmental and public health protections including the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999; and
* remove rights to "procedural fairness" and remove rights of appeal under the Administrative Decisions (Judicial Review) Act in relation to site nomination and selection.??

I ask you to urgently repeal this disgraceful legislation.

I also ask you to ensure that Labor honours its election pledge to handle the radioactive waste issue in a transparent, accountable and fair manner. This promise has been breached by Mr Ferguson. In April, Mr Ferguson refused to provide substantive answers to a large number of Senate questions regarding nuclear waste management. The evasion was so complete that even a question about what specific matters are under consideration was also said to be "under consideration".

Yours sincerely,

Ziggy spinning again ! Last time Ziggy Spinowski spruiked nukes in the prestigious Physics Lecture Room at Melbourne - he carefully avoided issues of health, environment, wastes, weapons proliferation, terrorism risks. Surprisingly - he also showed his ignorance of global warming.

Of course, he slid over the question of costs, too

But no matter - it was all arranged so reverently, that to open these matters up - well, you just had to heckle.

Perhaps his next public appearance will be handled with less reverence - and even non-engineers will be able to put Ziggy on the spot!

Climate of Hope is a 25 minute documentary created to demystify climate change and nuclear energy. While the threat of climate change is now widely accepted in the community, the potential for a host of nuclear power stations in Australia has raised questions about the best strategy for our country to move to a low-carbon economy.This animated documentary takes viewers on a tour through the science of climate change, the nuclear fuel chain, and the remarkable energy revolution that is under way.

Lobbying Local Councils from Sophie Green Friends of the Earth, Adelaide

We can continue to keep the pressure on by writing letters and meeting with councillors to encourage them to become Nuclear Free Zones;encouraging Mayors to join the international Mayors for Peace; getting local businesses to displaynuclear free zone stickers; and requesting that councils advocate for nuclear free alternatives at a local, state, and federal government level.For more information on local government lobbying, check out:www.nonukescanberra.org

Friends of the Earth Adelaide linked up with Friends of the Earth Melbourne to premiere Adelaide's new nuclear white elephant in the G20 Protest Carnival, together with other organisations and NGOs from around the country wishing to express their visions of a society beyond fat profits and multinational monopolies. The white elephant was enormously popular, with several punters telling us that it had "restored their faith" and it was their favourite thing from the day. We even got an interview with Chinese TV! from Sophie Green Friends of the Earth, Adelaide

What is the Beyond Nuclear Initiative?

This is a crucial year in the battle against the dirty, dangerous nuclear industry:
* The federal government is doing everything it can to expand uranium mining.
* The government is attempting to impose a nuclear waste dump on Northern Territorians, and an overseas consortium will attempt to convince Australians to host an international high-level nuclear waste dump.
* The push to introduce nuclear power plants into Australia will continue.
* The propaganda about a nuclear 'solution' to climate change will continue, even while the true solutions - energy efficiency measures and renewable energy sources - are ignored and underfunded.

To support and strengthen existing campaigns for a nuclear-free Australia, the Poola Foundation (Tom Kantor Fund), Friends of the Earth Australia and the Australian Conservation Foundation have joined forces to establish the Beyond Nuclear Initiative.

The Beyond Nuclear Initiative is campaigning:
* against the expansion of the uranium mining industry in Australia
* against the imposition of a nuclear waste dump on the Northern Territory
* in support of a clean energy future and against proposals to use nuclear power as a climate-change abatement strategy.

Australian action - Greenpeace in Australia: - go to http://www.greenpeace.org/australia and follow prompts

Greenpeace aims to reduce climate change and promote clean energy as a solution to global warming.
Greenpeace wants to increase Australia's renewable energy use, working with the community, industry and government.

We work with communities in the New South Wales Hunter Valley who want to make the move from polluting coal to clean industries.

We push state and federal governments to increase renewable energy targets. The federal government should agree to a national clean energy target of 10 per cent by 2010 and 20 per cent by 2020. Greenpeace is campaigning for our state and territory governments to take the lead and set a target of 20 per cent renewable energy by 2020.

We promote clean energy solutions to the community through education programs, the Grey Power Network of committed senior activists and the Switched On email newsletter.
